Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is this site?

Martha’s Darkroom offers image manipulation and imaging services for everyone. See the Services section to see the kinds of things we can do for you.

  • How does it work?

In the simplest terms you upload or post us your photos which we digitally restore, improve or create something new for you. We will email you the image back as well as post you a free 6x4 print if requested. If you've sent us hard copies they will be returned to you via recorded delivery along with your prints.

  • How much is it?

Each service has a different price depending on how much work is involved. A basic retouch and repair including scanning and a free print is £5. Go to our services page to see how the pricing works. If you have a large number of images we can negotiate better rates.

  • How much is postage?

Postage and packing varies depending on the type of prints ordered, see the printing section for the prices. There are no postage costs for the complimentary prints, they are totally free.

  • What is the free print like?

All prints are standard 6" x 4" glossy print printed on FujiFilm Crystal Archive photographic paper.

  • Do you print them?

No, we have an award winning third party company who prints them for us.

  • What if I don't want the print?

You must choose to have the free print in the order process so simply don’t select the option to have the free print.

  • How do I upload my picture?

Go to the upload page and fill in your details including details of the work you require. The form on the upload page has the ability to upload several images at once including details for each image. When we receive your images we will send confirmation and a total cost of the work including a Paypal invoice. Once payment is made the job will be completed and you will receive the digital files via email and your prints, if requested, via post.

  • Do I have to use the upload form?

No, you can also email your images to us if you're having problems with the upload system.

  • The upload form isn't working

Check your image to see that its not larger than 10mb, if it is try emailing the image to us instead. Save your images as jpgs to keep file size lower.

  • What if I have a print, I can't upload a physical picture?

You can either scan it yourself and upload it in the normal way or you can post it to us and we can scan it for you.

  • I don't want to post my print as its valuable to me, what can I do?

You could post the print recorded or special delivery and we will post it back to you with the same method at cost. If you're still uncomfortable sending images through the post you could try to get them scanned by someone you know or a local business such as Snappy Snaps. You could even get them colour photocopied and post them instead although there will be a loss of quality. We are aware that old photos are precious and we will treat them with the best possible care but we do not encourage sending precious pictures through the post unless you are completely sure about doing so as a small percentage of post does inevitably go missing from time to time.

  • How do I pay?

When you upload an image or we receive prints in the post we will generate a Paypal invoice which you can either pay by debit card or your Paypal account. We also accept cheques which you can post to us. When we receive payment the work will be completed.

  • I just want the basic service on a few pictures?

The upload service is ideal for this, simply upload your images, and we’ll email you a Paypal invoice. Once we receive payment we’ll process your images, email them back to you and begin the process of sending you your prints in the post.

  • What do I call my images?

Ideally call the images something relevant to the picture or your name so we can track them easily. All the details and what to call your images are on the upload page.

  • What do I save the image as?

Please save your images as a highest quality jpg, if you are unsure about any of this just email us and we can help.

  • I have 200 images that need retouching is that too many?

No, 200 images may be too much to upload in a convenient way, so with that many files or scans we can arrange alternate methods such as posting a dvd or prints to us. Contact us and we’ll get right back to you.

  • Do I get a better price for a large number of images?

Yes, depending on what you need doing we can negotiate special rates for batch processing. Just contact us and we can work something out.

  • Im not sure if I want what you're offering? Can I see the work before paying?

Unfortunately we can’t start work until payment has been made, however, if you are unhappy we will do our very best to get it right or refund your payment.

  • I'm not happy with the service, what can I do?

If for any reason you're not happy with our work or our service please let us know and we'll work hard to get the service right or give you a complete refund.

  • How long does it take?

If you upload your image and pay straight away you should expect your image back by email within the day or by the following morning depending on what time you uploaded it. You should then receive your free print or prints in the post within 3 to 4 days. If you require a large number of images retouching then the timescale will be longer but this can be negotiated before the job is accepted.

  • Is international shipping available?

Yes, we will email digital copies back to you which you can have straight away and we can also post your prints but it will just take slightly longer. We'll adjust the postage rates in the invoice for international shipping, please contact us for more confirmation of rates.

  • What if I want bigger prints?

You can order enlargements of your prints at extra cost as well as other printed items, see the printing section.
